Boiler Making Banging, Gurgling or Whistling Noises? What Each Sound Means
Boilers aren't silent, but they shouldn't sound like a kettle, a drum kit or a haunted house either. Different noises point to different problems — here's the translation, and which ones mean "call someone this week" rather than "keep an eye on it".
Kettling (rumbling like a boiling kettle)
Usual cause: limescale or sludge on the heat exchanger. Deposits create hot spots that make the water steam and bubble where it shouldn't. How urgent: moderately — kettling stresses the heat exchanger, the most expensive part of your boiler. A chemical cleanse or power flush usually sorts it. Don't leave it for years.
Banging or clunking
Usual causes: trapped air, sudden pipe expansion (if it's more of a tick/creak as heating warms up, that's often just pipes moving under floorboards), or — more seriously — delayed ignition, where gas builds before lighting with a small "whump". How urgent: a whump or bang at start-up needs a Gas Safe engineer promptly. Creaking pipes are usually harmless.
Gurgling
Usual causes: air in the system, low pressure, or a frozen condensate pipe in winter. What to try: bleed the radiators, check the pressure gauge (top up to ~1.2 bar if low), and in freezing weather thaw the white plastic pipe outside with warm water. Persistent gurgling after that suggests circulation problems worth a look.
Whistling
Usual causes: like kettling, often scale or trapped air; sometimes a failing fan bearing or a partially blocked valve restricting flow. How urgent: book a service — a whistle rarely fixes itself.
Humming or vibrating
Usual causes: the pump running too fast or working loose, a vibrating fan, or pressure set too high. How urgent: low — but a loosening pump gets worse, and it's a quick fix caught early.
Dripping or trickling
Water sounds inside the casing, or drips underneath, mean a leak — internal leaks corrode electronics fast. Turn the boiler off and call us.
The honest summary
Noises are symptoms, and most trace back to three root causes: dirty system water, air/pressure problems, or a worn component. All three are cheaper to fix early. A noisy boiler that still works is exactly the right time to call — not after it stops.
