Burst Pipe in Preston? Do These 4 Things Right Now
A burst pipe dumps water fast, so the order you do things in matters. Work through these four steps, then get us on the phone.
1. Stop the water
Turn the stopcock clockwise until it's fully closed. It's usually under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs toilet, under the stairs, or where the mains pipe comes into the house. (Tonight's job, once this is over: make sure everyone in the house knows where it is.)
2. Protect the electrics
If water is anywhere near sockets, light fittings or the fuse box, turn the electricity off at the consumer unit. Don't touch anything electrical with wet hands.
3. Drain the system
Open all the cold taps and flush the toilets — this empties the pipes and takes the pressure off the burst, slowing the leak to a dribble. If the burst is on a heating pipe, turn the boiler off too.
