Combi vs System Boiler: Which Is Right for Your Home?
Choosing a new boiler usually comes down to one question: combi or system? Here's the plain-English version we give customers across Preston.
Combi boilers
A combi (combination) boiler heats water on demand, straight from the mains — no tanks, no cylinder.
Good for: most small to medium homes, 1–2 bathrooms, anyone short on space (no loft tank or airing-cupboard cylinder needed), and lower running costs because you only heat water you use.
The catch: hot water flow is limited by your mains pressure. Run two showers at once and both will feel it.
System boilers
A system boiler heats a cylinder of stored hot water, so there's a ready supply.
Good for: larger homes, two or more bathrooms used at the same time, and homes with lower mains pressure.
The catch: you need space for the cylinder, and you're paying to keep stored water hot.
Conventional (heat-only) boilers
The old-style setup with tanks in the loft and a cylinder. Mostly found in older Preston homes. If yours works fine, there's no rush to change it — but when replacement time comes, converting to a combi often frees up a surprising amount of space.
What we'd actually recommend
It comes down to your water pressure, how many bathrooms you have, and how your household uses hot water. When we quote, we check all three and tell you straight which type suits — we fit what's right for the house, not what's easiest to sell. As a Baxi Approved Installer we can offer extended warranties on select new Baxi boilers of both types.
