Radiator Cold at the Bottom (or Top)? Here's What It Means

A radiator that won't heat properly is your heating system telling you exactly what's wrong — you just need to know the language. Here's the translation.

Cold at the top, warm at the bottom

Air. Easy one. Air rises to the top of the radiator and stops water filling it. Bleed it: heating off, bleed key in the valve at the top corner, quarter-turn until it hisses, close when water appears. Check the boiler pressure afterwards and top up if it's dropped.

Cold at the bottom, warm at the top

Sludge. Magnetite — rusty debris from inside your system — settles at the bottom of radiators and blocks circulation. Bleeding won't fix this. One radiator can sometimes be removed and flushed through; sludge in several radiators means the system needs a proper flush, and it's also quietly shortening your boiler's life by clogging the heat exchanger and pump.

One radiator completely cold

Usually a stuck thermostatic valve (TRV). Take the head off and the pin underneath should spring up and down — if it's seized down, a gentle press-and-release often frees it. If the valve is old and stiff, it's a cheap swap.

Radiators upstairs hot, downstairs cold (or vice versa)

A balancing problem, or on older systems a failing pump. Balancing — adjusting the lockshield valves so every radiator gets its share — is fiddly but transforms uneven systems.
