How to Cut Your Heating Bills Without Freezing: What Actually Works

Plenty of energy-saving advice is written by people who've never held a spanner. Here's what we actually see working in Preston homes — roughly in order of effort versus payback.

1. Turn down your boiler's flow temperature (free, 2 minutes)

The single most under-used saving in the country. Most combi boilers leave the factory set to send water to the radiators at 70–80°C — but condensing boilers only hit their advertised efficiency when the return water is cool enough to condense (flow around 60°C or below). Turning the radiator/flow dial down to about 60°C makes most homes no colder, just slightly slower to warm up — and typically shaves several percent off the gas bill. If your radiators then can't keep up on the coldest days, nudge it up a touch.

2. Use TRVs properly (free)

Those numbered radiator valves are room thermostats. You don't need the spare room at the same temperature as the living room — set unused rooms to 2 and close their doors. Heating fewer cubic metres is the most honest saving there is.

3. Heat by schedule, not by habit

A timer or smart thermostat that matches your actual routine beats both "on all day" and the constant on-off fiddling. The old debate — is it cheaper to leave heating on low all day? — has a clear answer for most homes: no. Heat only when you need it; the house loses energy constantly while warm, so fewer warm hours means less gas.

4. Bleed and balance the radiators (free–cheap)

Air-locked and unbalanced radiators make the boiler work longer for the same comfort. Bleeding is a DIY job; balancing is fiddlier but transforms uneven systems.

5. Deal with sludge

A sludged system can't deliver heat efficiently no matter what the controls do — if radiators are cold at the bottom, see our power flush guide. Add a magnetic filter afterwards and it stays clean.

6. Service the boiler annually

A clean, correctly-adjusted burner uses less gas, and the service catches efficiency-sapping faults early. Most warranties require it anyway — see how often to service.

What doesn't really work

  • Foil behind radiators on modern insulated walls — marginal at best.
  • Painting radiators black — no.
  • Cranking the thermostat to 30 to "heat up faster" — radiators heat at one speed; you just overshoot and waste gas.
  • Blocking vents and chimneys — saves pennies, causes damp (and with gas appliances, ventilation is a safety matter).

The bigger lever: an efficient boiler

If your boiler is 15+ years old and non-condensing, it may be running at 70–80% efficiency against 90%+ for a modern one — on a typical Preston gas bill that's real money every year. When the sums favour replacing, we'll show you them; when they don't, we'll say so. Free quotes: 07949 075721, the form below, or our boilers page.
